Every once in awhile I come in contact with a person who is so vibrant and so dynamic I feel like no matter what I write it simply can not compare with meeting the person in person!
Marguerite Newell is such a person. Marguerite Newell is the fifth person on the Yarmouth Working Studios Brochure and is a Quilter Extraordinaire!
In fact she is really such an extraordinary person spending time with her leaves you wanting more! More out of life, your art, your quilting, and everything else that may come your way!
Marguerite backs down from nothing and her motto seems to be “let me at it!”
No matter what Marguerite has encountered in her life she has learned to overcome it! Always willing to tackle anything that comes her way she remains forever young!
The attitude with which Marguerite approaches life is reflected in her approach to her Quilting and Embroidery.
She embraces the newest and most up-to-date methods in her work and this is reflected in not only her finished master pieces but in the equipment she uses also!
Perhaps her favorite tool is her Husqvarna Viking Designer SE which allows her to reduce the amount of time she spends per quilt and yet maintain the same high quality of work. In fact she challenges you to tell the difference between the machine quilt stitch and one done by hand!
She is quick to tell you the Husqvarna Viking Designer SE is the top of the line and the SE stands for Simply Excellent! In fact Marguerite believes it so much that when she decided she wanted one she cashed in her car to get it!
Marguerite’s work is of such a remarkable quality that her quilts and other works have made their way around the world with many displayed at various locations throughout the USA and Canada! In fact her work can be readily seen in the windows at the MacKinnon Cann Inn at 27 Willow St. in Yarmouth, where the draperies are those she was requested to make by the owners of the Inn.
In keeping up with the newest ways of doing things Marguerite also has an impressive computer that allows her to choose among a vast variety of patterns and designs that makes her life a more rewarding experience!
However, Marguerite is also quick to tell you that just in case the lights go out for good, she’s prepared! For she also maintains her old Singer Treadle Sewing Machine!
All the fancy new gadgets are great and make it so anyone can quilt, embroider, and do any number of wonderful things. However, if we don’t maintain the knowledge and practice of the old ways you’ll not be prepared for any eventuality that may come our way. It’s better to always be prepared… use the newest and the best whenever possible, but never let go of the old ways and old standbys that have worked for an eternity! These are lessons that are gleaned from spending time with Marguerite Newell Quilter Extraordinaire!
