THYARC LOBBY GALLERY APRIL EXHIBIT

From sea level to 5500 feet, with spoons and forks in between by Dave Gorman
About the artist:
Dave Gorman was born and raised in Yarmouth NS. He attended university at Mount Allison in Sackville New Brunswick focusing on coastal geography and Canadian studies but taking a few art history classes.

He began painting at the age of 12 spending one year in the Art in Action program and then continuing to study with Gertrude and Paula Garson.

The Garson Sisters made a profound influence on his artistic methods that allowed him to paint freely but still maintain the rules of art.

Davids art focuses on semi-abstract coastal and mainland interpretations as well as some abstractions and mixed media such as sculpture with household items.

His main influence is the natural environment and its ever changing demeanor.

This exhibit will feature some works from the past five years but mainly from the last twelve months, focusing on Davids favorite spots in Atlantic Canada and portraits of Yoho National Park in British Columbia.

You can also expect a few sculptures.

====================================================================

Not far from Downtown Yarmouth is an interesting sight that you’ll not want to miss on your next visit to Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. Just a few minutes drive North on Main Street (which becomes Route 1) you’ll see sitting atop a little knoll on your left and overlooking Doctors Lake a set of whale bones. This may be a common sight to local residents, but few know the story behind the whale bones, the people who have lived there, or the history of the amazing building in whose front yard the bones appear.

The whale bones we are referring to are the jaw bones of a baleen whale, also called whalebone or great whales. Baleen whales belong to the whale sub-order form theMysticeti, the largest species of whales, one of two suborders of the Cetacea (which includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises). The scientific name derives from the Greek word mystax, which means “moustache”.

The bones which we are referring to are part of a road sign for At the Sign of the Whale Nova Scotia Crafts and Art Gallery. The current proprietors Michael and Frances Morris opened their shop in 1981; however, theirs is not the original At the Sign of the Whale!

You see, Michaels grandfather, J. Malcolm (Mac) Horton, ran “At the Sign of the Whale Antiques” in the same location prior to 1975. He had moved the business there in 1970 from its original location in Milton Highlands, Yarmouth County.

However the whale bones may date back even earlier to a curiosity shop which operated in Arcadia, Yarmouth County, in the early 1900s!

In more recent years Michael and Frances have added another set of jaw bones to the side of their building. The jaw bones outside and whale vertebrae on display inside the shop provide ongoing fascination to visitors.

A report from the Nova Scotia Fisheries Museum in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia states that it is good luck to have your picture taken beneath whale bones. Many have availed themselves of this opportunity at the Sign of the Whale.

The history of the building is as interesting as the story of the whale bones!

The building which houses At the Sign of the Whale Nova Scotia Crafts and Art Gallery is a Provincial and Municipal heritage property. In fact it was declared the first provincial heritage property in the Municipality of Yarmouth, N.S. in 1989.

The land for the house was first purchased in 1792 by Jacob Tedford Sr., a Loyalist shoemaker who had first arrived in Shelburne, Nova Scotia from New York with his recently widowed mother and four brothers and sisters. The construction of the house, which is post and beam using pegs instead of nails, was probably finished about 1795 making this New England Colonial style home one of the earliest in the area.

I, Brian Hurlburt, have a connection to this house because Jacob Tedford was my 5th Great Grandfather!

All but two of the owners of this house from the time it was built until 1898 were shoemakers!

The various owners of the house were Jacob Tedford, Sr. 1792-1841 shoemaker; Samuel Soames Bain 1841-1871 shoemaker; Jacob Israel Phillips 1871-1878 shoemaker; James Bond Weddleton 1878-1885 sail-maker; Jacob Israel Phillips 1885-1886 shoemaker; Isaac M. Mellish 1886-1890 Methodist Clergyman; Jacob Israel Phillips 1890-1890 shoemaker; J. Harvey Cann 1890-1898 shoemaker; Israel K. Trask 1898-1916 butcher/farmer; Maggie W. Pitman 1916-1934 wife of Clement Pitman ” butcher; J. Herman Gillis 1934-1957 butcher/merchant; John W. MacLeod 1957-1958 trader/horse farmer; Jennie MacLeod 1958-N/A married woman; Dora Elliot / Ruth E. Boyd N/A-1967 heirs-at-law of Jennie MacLeod; John William Morris, et ux 1967-1982 teacher; and now Michael and Frances Morris from 1982 to present.

It is quite interesting that the vast majority of the home owners were entrepreneurs and that the home remains a source of inspiration to all who visit.

While the upstairs is Michael and Frances’ family residence, the first story of this building has been turned into At the Sign of the Whale Nova Scotia Crafts and Art Gallery with Morris Pottery in the back wing.

When Frances and Michael Morris opened “At the Sign of the Whale” in 1981 they took as their mandate to handle Nova Scotia crafts and art exclusively, a mandate which they continue to uphold. Presently they carry the work of 150 craftspeople and artists from around the province including pewter, folk art, hooking, quilts, wood turning, wind chimes, jewellery, window ornaments, weaving, knitting, jackets, bubble glass and Nova Scotia books. Since 1983 At the Sign of the Whale has mounted regular art and craft exhibitions from solo shows by artists like Lucy Jarvis, Helen Weld, Clive Roberts, DeniseComeau and Lio Lo to group shows of the provincial organizations Nova Scotia Printmakers Association, Atlantic Spinners and Handweavers , and Nova Scotia Potters Guild. Several book launchings and signings have been hosted there such as Bob Brooks’ highly successful photography book Yarmouth County and, most recently, artist Cecil Day and poet Artis Bernard’s art book In Tandem.

Morris Pottery has been produced by Frances and Michael since 1976. The Morrises take custom orders for their pottery as well as for the other crafts and art which they carry, and ship throughout North America.

Their interest in preserving our built heritage led them in 1996 to begin Yarmouth, N.S. Landmarks, a series of pewter replicas of Yarmouth Town and County landmarks which are available only at The Sign of the Whale. This highly successful series is a feature of At the Sign of the Whales website www.signofthewhaleonline.com.

In its 27 years in business At the Sign of the Whale has stood for excellence in Nova Scotia crafts and art; its historic building is an added attraction. The next time you are in Yarmouth County be sure to visit “At the Sign of the Whale Nova Scotia Crafts and Art Gallery”.

Interactive Nutrition a 12-year-old nutritional manufacturer from Canada was recently sold for more than $25 million and now Tim Connolly, CEO of iNutrition.com is bringing it home so to speak!

Tim Connolly says, “When we initially purchased iNutrition, We just knew from day 1 what the HUGE potential of this company was! Even to this day I can hardly contain my excitement.”
Continuing on Connolly whose often asked, the question as to why they paid so much for it? Says, “Great question! You see, it was already a well established manufacturer, wholesaler and distributor of high quality nutritional products. It was already successful and doing multiple millions of dollars in over 18 countries.
But they hadnt even begun to tap into the huge multi-billion dollar health food, sports, weight loss and nutritional supplement market in the US. It’s not that they hadnt been successful, they hadnt even tried! For personal reasons, the previous owners had already met their financial goals doing a little over 17 million in sales, of which most was in Canada alone!
Now for those of you who do not know, Canada has a total population of about 30 million. That means that the company sold approximately 56 cents per individual. Now I am a numbers guy, and the law of large numbers if planned correctly applies in ANY market and any country. Let’s take the USA for example, 56 cents times 300 million US population.
Just in the USA alone, that is an easy 170 million in sales! Can you see the potential here? Imagine when we go global using the power of the internet, … Can you see the potential commissions? YIKES it can be staggering”

To accomplish his companies goal of expanding this nutritional company to the USA and then Globally Tom Connolly and his company are turning to the home based business world to help market the product.

By manufacturing their own products, cutting out the middle man, and concentrating on home based business people to market the products Connolly plans to pay the Home Based Business person what would normally be taken by the middlemen and then pass the additional savings on to the end consumer.

If you’ve ever considered a home based business this may be the opportunity for you. To learn more about this golden opportunity to work from home, harness the power of the Internet, and possibly earn a great income i the field of natural nutritional products all you need to do for more information is visit iNutrition.

A small personal note here from Brian Hurlburt, this is being promoted by the same people who I rely on for my Hosting and online support services. The same people who recently released the Joel Therien Wealth Home Study Course for becoming successful online.

I have to say when I first heard about this I was skeptical! However, because it was Joel Therien, who I’ve learned to trust and depend on I will be pursuing this as a viable option. I invite you to at least read about it and decide for yourself. If you do decide to join us please let me know so I can be sure to see you get all the help possible.
So, find out more now by visiting iNutrition and see how Interactive Nutrition Comes Home, or should I say Home Based!?
The blog, like the conference series, aims to drive and deepen conversation about how todays companies can Innovate, Accelerate and Dominate and is home to ongoing discussion about the user revolution.

When Brian Hurlburt, of YarmouthCounty.com, was recently approached by Robert Paterson, who is a contributing author with FastForwdBlog.com, about being interviewed about the way YarmouthCounty.com has impacted the local Yarmouth County area Hurlburt jumped at the opportunity.

Robert Paterson’s hope is that Social Software and online communications can and will help us to collectively address many of todays critical situations and it is from this aspect that he writes for FastForwdBlog.com.

It is also from this perspective and after having watched YarmouthCounty.com and the impact it is making in Yarmouth County and surrounding areas, and beyond, that Rob approached Hurlburt in this regard.

Paterson’s work is helping people in a few key areas discover how best to enable people to help each other rather than to rely on institutions. Recognizing this attitude permeating Hurlburt’s YarmouthCounty.com web presence has drawn Paterson’s discerning eye to Yarmouth County.

Paterson’s Fast Forward Blog Posts strive to tell about the pioneers that are putting it all on the line to change traditional institutions. Answering questions as to how we can find a way of democratizing the institutions that govern our world before they use our obedience to destroy it.

Paterson writes about the pioneers that are working to change the ways things are done. To impower local people and communities become the best that they can in developing systems that are really responsive to the needs of those communities they serve.

Seeing YarmouthCounty.com’s impact on the local community and recognizing Hurlburt’s ongoing commitment and pioneering spirit is what has captured the interest of Robert Paterson and the FastForwdBlog.com and the focus on Yarmouth County.

Long considered the stepping stone of Nova Scotia, Yarmouth County is now home to the Stepping Stones; and this week the Justice Minister visited Yarmouth and addressed the local Chamber of Commerce to tell them how he is in support of the local program.

The Stepping Stones Program helps young people in transition to become more self sufficient and more employable.

The Stepping Stones program, under supervision of Emma Halpern, recently held it’s first Graduation Ceremonies the end of February 2008. It was at that Graduation that 10 of the original 12 Stepping Stones participants graduated after the three month course in which they worked on resume building, interview, literacy, and life skills.

It is these skills that are seen as helping to build self esteem and leading participants to maintaining a more stable life.

The program gets to the root of the problems faced by youth in transition and addresses far more than resume building. It helps to build youth into fully functional community members that are equipped with the skills to survive, live, and thrive, in todays hectic and competitive world.

Limited funding for the recently graduated Stepping Stones program participants came in part from the Department of Community Services. Program organizers have been seeking more secure funding to ensure the program can continue to run and that a full-time coordinator for the program can be hired.

After this weeks visit by the Justice Minister to Yarmouth and the address he delivered to the local Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce it seems that those funds may be coming more available.

Seemingly recognizing the needs of the Stepping Stones program to better support youth who are willing to put in the work and improve themselves and become better community members the Minister of Justice left behind a check for $5000 and information that may lead to future funding possibilities.
The Justice Minister in his address referred to Stepping Stones no less than 5 times in his 30 minutes and it was a great opportunity for local politicians and Chamber of Commerce members to be made more aware of the Steppng Stones program, recent success stories, and perceived positvi benefits that will come from the continuance of the program in the future.

Nothing quite like having the Minister of Justice recommend your program to give it some traction in the local community.

After the meeting was over the Justice Minister privately presented the check for $5000. While local community members including Yarmouth Town Mayor Charles Crosby and local MLA Richard Hurlburt seemed supportive.

SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 7:30
The local band TINPOT will be performing and hosting a fundraiser for ThYARC, March 29th.

The four member group of talented young musicians has evolved from just jamming together on weekends to the recognition as one of the hottest up and coming bands in the community.

TINPOT made their unofficial debut at ThYARC for the open mic Halloween special, THE MONSTER MUSIC MASH BASH.

Their young ages and lack of experience performing publicly didnt prevent their unmistakable ability to entertain the audience, demonstrate their unquestionable talent, and make an impression on the Executive Director of ThYARC. In fact, enough of an impression that they were invited to be the opening act for the legendary STAMPEDERS one month later.

They have since recorded a demo CD, been invited to perform at other events and are enjoying a rise in popularity and respect as gifted musicians within the community.

In appreciation for the support TINPOT received from ThYARC they will be hosting and performing in concert on Saturday March 29th 7:30 pm

Guest performers include Danny MacIsaac, Jamie Surette, and Alton Nickerson.

============================================================

For centuries we’ve been celebrating Easter and why should this year be any different!?

Ah, but it is different!

This is the first time I can remember Easter being celebrated this early in the year. That’s not to say that it’s the first time, nor even that it’s the first time I’ve experienced an Easter this early in the year. However it is the earliest I ever remember it being this early and the way I know that is that it’s the first time I ever remember Easter coming before my birthday which is 26 March (you guess the year!)

Easter today celebrates the death and resurrection of Christ, that which fulfills the Law, and that promises eternal; life for those that believe. The Bible teaches that whosoever will may come, that through the death of Jesus Christ paid the penalty for sin for all who believe in Him, and His resurrection gave Him power over death and grants eternal life with Him to all who confess their sins and believe in Him as Lord and Saviour. Since that is the central message in and throughout the Bible it’s little wonder that Easter holds such an important part in the Christian life and Calendar.

Why then does the date change so?
According to The Easter Page — Traditions, History, and Dates of Easter the reason dates back to 325 AD. The Easter Page states, “Prior to A.D. 325, Easter was variously celebrated on different days of the week, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In that year, the Council of Nicaea was convened by emperor Constantine. It issued the Easter Rule which states that Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. However, a caveat must be introduced here. The “full moon” in the rule is the ecclesiastical full moon, which is defined as the fourteenth day of a tabular lunation, where day 1 corresponds to the ecclesiastical New Moon. It does not always occur on the same date as the astronomical full moon. The ecclesiastical “vernal equinox” is always on March 21. Therefore, Easter must be celebrated on a Sunday between the dates of March 22 and April 25. “
“Why”, you might ask, “would such an important date on the Christian Calendar be tied so closely with the cycles of the Moon?”
Thanks for asking, I was hoping you would…
You see, according to the Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance, “Modern-day Easter is derived from two ancient traditions: one Judeo-Christian and the other Pagan. Both Christians and Pagans have celebrated death and resurrection themes following the Spring Equinox for millennia. Most religious historians believe that many elements of the Christian observance of Easter were derived from earlier Pagan celebrations.”
Perhaps another reason, or a supporting reason, for this is that in 325 AD the Church was growing and taking over many traditional worship places and other aspects of the Pagan world. If Christians were building their Churches and worshiping on Pagan sites then it only goes to figure they were also incorporating other traditions and customs that came at the time Pagans were being convirted to Christianity. One such occasion is Easter.

My somewhat unresolved questions are, “If it was only about 300 years after the death of Christ why did they not know, or celebrate, the specific date?” Why link it around a Pagan Festival? Why was it so tied to the Moon and lunar cycles as were other Pagan Festivals?
(I invite you to carry on that discussion via the “Comments Section” below)
Whatever the reasons, the fact remains that Easter, at least for the Christian Church, is the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection and what He has done for all of us past and present.
